Cute silver

And.. they're only so lazy because they're so damn active once they get going!
All that energy needs to build up. XD

Silver? I'd always been wondering about it, fighting myself over whether she was a dark silver or a light sable. lol. I wanted people's input, but I never got it!
They are hella lazy... but you're right, they get that energy up, and they're zooming around after each other in the room dooking and happy dancing. Gods I love them.

I'm sorry.... the ferrets ran off with my mind again. I'll check the hidey-hole later.
:iconshiftyferret:
The ferret I have now, Kaie is a 'silver panda' more or less.
Though really, if you only look at her back or sides without the overall picture her fur has alot of light sable. The standards really aren't strict in pets. So really it's pretty much what ever you think it is.
From the picture she looks silver.

She looks silver in real-life too, not just pics, but it has always been between light sable and silver. Heh. Doesn't matter to me, though, because she's perfect the way she is. I didn't pick her because of her color... I really didn't pick her at all. I'd actually wanted her brother, but he got sold before I had the money to buy a ferret. So I took her home, and she was one squirmy hellofa kit. But she has calmed down so much, and just loves to take naps with me. Daemeon, on the other hand, won't stay in my lap for long. I read somewhere that males are more snuggly than females, but I have found this to be contrary for me!

Ha!

I know what you mean. I fell in love with Kylan because of how crazy he acted in the cage at the store. [He was housed horribly, ever ferret NONO... rubber toys... woodchip bedding]He was all alone and much older then the other little kits being sold. Head over feet, I would call the petshop like "OMG IS THE LITTLE FERRET STILL THERE!?!" They answered all surprised at me. "He's been here forever."
So I got my shit together and kidnapped him, indignantly since they told me he was a girl. Even though I knew better. Kylan was my reintroduction to ferrets after the ferrets of my childhood. I learned the sad fact that they are no longer the same healthy creatures.
Kylan was a very smart and active boy, he would come snuggle only when he was very tired. As the years went on, however, he grew to be a very cuddly boy. I think males do become snuggly, when they're older and they 'calm down'. Course, they don't really calm down... energetic sperts just take longer to build up!

My new girl, who I said I would never get another petshop weasel... foolish me, I fell in love with her instantly as well. She was such a little monster. Chewing on the faces of all the sleeping kits. Digging up the food and litter... I'm a sucker for abuse. She was colored like Kylan, and that's kinda what held me off... since I was worried I'd be 'replacing' him. Again... foolish me.

Right now, she's the ever crazy unstoppable kit. She will only curl up with me when she's completely tired..... so..... hopefully that will change...in time!
Daemeon might change as he ages too. You might get the snuggly boy yet!

Daemeon's two years old(I think, this is what his previous owner told me). I got him when he was one. He hasn't calmed down. He'd rather sleep anywhere but in my arms, like he'll plop down right on the tile floor and do the "flat-ferret". He also loves his little burrow-bed thing, and sleeping in the big cuddle cup. He came out of a pretty bad situation. i got him here in Germany last summer, someone just drove by me at the comissary, stuck her head out the window, asking me and my friends if we wanted a ferret. So I asked my dad, and surprisedly, he let me take him home. Daemeon's actual owner was in Kuwait, and this was the owner's mother who gave him to me. He'd been kept in a rusty cage outdoors, with rubber toys, fed tendervittles, with a wood-chip bedding, unlitter trained, and had never received a vaccination in his life. He wasn't neutered, either. And he's not descented, because that's illegal over here, but I think that the surgery to do that is completely unneccessary. Daemeon has turned into a healthy, happy boy, and over time he has become best buddies with Salem(it was rough in the beginning, litter training him and getting the ferts used to each other).
Salem was my first fert, and a pet shop fert, but her situation wasn't too bad, and the only problem was they used a wood-chip bedding and fed her the Marshall Farms diet(man, that stuff smells like fish!)
Well, have to go.

UGH! Poor boy! I'm glad he ended up in your hands, it could have been any one she gave the ferret away too... then again I guess 'anyone' would have been an improvement. I say that since you seem honestly interested and concerned with weasel welfare. As all ferret owners -should- be.

I definitely agree with you there, I don't think getting them decented is neccessary. Actually, I believe it is detrimental and stupid. Decenting them doesn't make them any less 'musky'. It only takes away one of their few defenses against predators.
Years ago when my mother and father bred them [Only because they had to. This was over twenty years ago and not alot of vets knew anything about them, and so the girls have to be bred or else you risk anemia and death].
Well, two beautiful huskies got into the porch were a ferret and rabbit where housed [Seperately! XD]. The dogs destroyed both cages and ripped apart the poor bunny. They left the ferret alone because he bombed! That's the only thing that saved him.

Though, I do think ferrets should be neutered or spayed... at the right age... not before there little eyes are opened like they do at the huge 'Puppymill' ferret farms. I'm thrilled now that there is more information about them out there and I can enjoy my ferrets simply as pets. Spoiled rotten pets!

Oh, and don't expect Daemeon to calm down soon. Kylan calmed down a year before his death. He never really wanted to be in my arms either, though if I left him out in the room he -would- climb in bed with me and sleep at my feet. [Sometimes, othertimes the dresser drawers were too much of a temptation!] But for right now, I'd just say enjoy him for the little hellraiser he is. Ferrets don't have to be cuddly to be 'good ferrets'. Kylan wasn't cuddly in the begining... but MAN did he love playing with us.

I would never say that Daemeon isn't a good ferret... he's a GREAT ferret. I love both my weasels for who they are. Being psychotic is one of their best traits. ;-)
That is such an awesome story about how the ferret saved himself by "bombing". I don't think I'd ever want to descent a ferret again(but then again, in the states, it can be hard to come by an undescented ferret). Salem came to me that way. She's a Marshall Farms fert. I don't support Marshall Farms from what I've read about them, but most of the ferrets people come across are Marshalls. Cept for Daemeon. He's my lil German boy. =-) I think that anyone who wants a ferret should get one undescented; if you can't handle the smell, then don't get one! Some people can't even stand the smell of descented ferts. My parents complain about the smell every time they come in my room. And poofing honestly doesn't bother me that much. Even before Daemeon got neutered, I didn't consider his smell to be "horrible", and I don't understand why people would have to keep their boys in the garage. Heh.
As for spaying, i say do it right before they hit sexual maturity. Which is like between 6-10 months, I think. Daemeon had already been way past that when I got him. Salem, well, like I said, she's a Marshalls.
Know any good ferret breeders/shelters in Georgia?

Unfortuantely I don't, but you can always do a search on the web. OR grab yourself a copy of 'Ferrets USA' often the Annuals will have directories of ferret vets, rescues and breeders. I'm looking at the 2006, they don't seem to list breeders this year.

If you could find a shelter in your area you could always ask them about ferretyfolks in the neighborhood. Of course, they'd probably want you to adopt a fuzzy first! And, that might not be such a bad idea.
When the time comes that I'm going to be looking for another carpetshark, I think I'll get one from a good breeder. A ferret that I know will live a long healthy life, barring mischief accidents. And one ferret from a shelter, one that I can give a good home for the rest of it's life, no matter how long that is.
